Haxtun Harvest, Haxtun, Colorado, December 11, 1929 HAXTUN FARMER DIES SUDDENLY William Kassing is Victim of Heart Attack This Afternoon; Was Highly Respected William Kassing, well-known and highly respected farmer of southeast of Haxtun, died suddenly this afternoon while at work in his cornfield. Heart failure was the cause of death. Mr. Kassing, who was about 55 years of age, was apparently in the best of health and had been husking corn all day in the same field with one or more of his brothers. The first intimation that anything was wrong came when it was discovered that his team was loose in the field. He was found a short time after this discovery by his brother, George, who had gone to search for him when he saw his brother was not with the wagon. Mr. Kassing was found lying in the field upon his back and it was evident that death had come very suddenly. From appearances he had just straightened up from his work and when the attack came on toppled over backwards. Coroner H.B. Radford of Haxtun was called immediately. When he arrived he found evidence of death from natural causes so conclusively that no inquest will be held. The body was brought to the Radford Funeral Home in Haxtun late this afternoon where it will be prepared for burial. No announcement of the time of funeral or place of burial had been made by the family at the time this is being written. Mr. Kassing was never married and had resided at Haxtun for about 26 years. He was a good neighbor and highly respected by his friends and associates. He is survived by several brothers and sisters at Haxtun and numerous relatives at the former family home in Nebraska.
Haxtun Harvest, Haxtun, Colorado, December 18, 1929 John William Kassing, the oldest son of a family of nine, was born at Pine Grove, Lawrence County, Ohio on February 20, 1867 and died on December 11th, 1929, at the age of 62 years and 10 months. A year after his birth, his parents moved to Nebraska and located on a farm near Clatonia. Here they remained until 1909, when the family moved to Colorado and settled on land southeast of Haxtun. William Kassing has never married and for some time has lived alone on his farm. He was a very fine neighbor, a good farmer, loyal friend and brother, and was highly respected by all who knew him. His death has come as a great shock to us all, and our deepest sympathy is extended to his bereaved relatives in their great loss. Brother Kassing was a very fine Christian man, having been converted as a boy in some revival meeting at Clatonia, Nebraska. He joined the Methodist church and throughout a long, happy, and useful life, he has never swerved in his loyalty and allegiance to the Savior he loved and to the church of his choice. Quiet and unassuming in character, yet absolutely dependable and conscientious, regular in attendance at Sunday school and church, he had been a brother greatly beloved and admired for his sterling work. We shall miss his cheerful face in the congregations at church, but we shall rejoice in the knowledge and assurance that he was ready for the sudden call from the Master he loved and has gone to his reward. "Well done, good and faithful servant. Thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter now into the joy of my Lord." The following brothers and sisters remain to mourn their loss: John Kassing, Mrs. Otto Fix, Frank Kassing, Dave Kassing, Alice Kassing and George Kassing, all of whom are living in and around Haxtun. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at two o’clock p.m., December 15, 1929, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Hugh Neville and interment was made in the Haxtun cemetery. |
